What’s New? ... Major updates to the site

Friday 7 October 2005

We have our first two walk descriptions available, complete with detailed instructions and a full OS map of the route. You can choose from the Fairfield Horseshoe or the Kentmere Round.

Tuesday 4 October 2005

A new screensaver is available from today. Lake District Landscapes explores some of the most beautiful parts of the national park and contains eight photographs. But for $10.00 you can unlock the full version which contains an additional 22 photographs (so 30 in all). This will also help to support the overall running costs of Lake District Desktops.

Wednesday 9 February 2005

From now on, our new pictures will be available in three different sizes: 1024 x 768 pixels; 1280 x 960 pixels; or 2048 x 1536 pixels. Clicking on a thumbnail will produce a small preview picture and a chance to choose the size you wish to view. Obviously, the larger the picture, the greater the download size. But if you have a bigger (or smaller) monitor than our old standard sized picture of 1280 x 960, you can now choose a wallpaper that better suits your needs!

Over the next few months, we may roll this option out retrospectively on our older gallery of images.

Saturday 29 January 2005

We now offer free screensavers to download for your Mac or Windows PC. A choice of two are currently available:Snow and Ice or Lakes and Rivers. If you download and install them, next time your computer screen goes to sleep, you’ll enjoy a slideshow of beautiful Lake District scenery.

Sunday 21 November 2004

A new bonus gallery of the Peak District in Derbyshire in snow -- in November! Some fantastic winter scenery.

Sunday 12 September 2004

Not so much a website note as a personal one. On Tuesday 7 September 2004 I climbed my 214th ’Wainwright’ (something that will mean more to some visitors to this site than to others!) Now I can start counting all over again!

Mon 9 August 2004

The new look Lake District Desktops website was launched after many nights working into the wee small hours. There are dozens of new features and refinements including:

  • An entirely redesigned site navigation system. I hope you'll find it both neater to use and cleaner than the old one.

  • Extensive use of javascript to drive the galleries throughout the site; this means that the site will always be up to date, even when I'm away and unable to do it personally.

  • A fully featured search system that allows you to find any photograph in our database. So if you've recently climbed Scafell, for example, you can easily find a picture for your desktop to remind you of your exploits.

  • A brand new bookshop, packed with walking guides, maps and books covering photography.

iThe one downside is that very old browsers may no longer be able to use the site. I hope that this will inconvenience very few people (if any). The new site has been tested in the following browsers:

  • Safari 1.2 (Mac OS X)
  • Netscape Navigator 7 (Mac OS X, OS 9, Windows)
  • Internet Explorer 5.1 (Mac OS X, OS 9) and 6.0.2 (Windows)
  • Camino 0.8 (Mac OS X)
  • Mozilla 1.7.2 (Windows)
  • Opera 7.54 (Mac OS X; Windows)

Feedback on the new look site is always welcome. Please do drop us an email or leave a message in our guestbook.
